How many Japanese pronouns are there?
2.1.
In modern Japanese there are 8 1st personal pronouns: watakushi, atakushi, watashi, atashi, washi, boku, ore, jibun, although atakushi, washi and jibun are becoming old-fashioned.
Pronouns in the Japanese language are used less frequently than they would be in many other languages, mainly because there is no grammatical requirement to explicitly mention the subject in a sentence. So, pronouns can seldom be translated from English to Japanese on a one-on-one basis.
Just like nouns in Japanese, pronouns also only have one form in Japanese. In other words, subject pronouns and object pronouns in Japanese are the same. Thus, 私 (watashi) means both 'I' and 'me'; 彼 (kare) means both 'he' and 'him'; and so on.
Third Person Pronouns
The pronouns for the third person are "kare (he)" or "kanojo (she)." Rather than using these words, it is preferred to use the person's name or describe them as "ano hito (that person)." It is not necessary to include gender.
There are no gender differences in written Japanese (except in quoted speech), and almost no differences in polite speech (teineigo).
In contrast to many Indo-European (including Romance, Slavic and Germanic) languages, Japanese has no grammatical gender in its nouns or adjective agreement. Moreover, the Japanese honorifics such as -san and -sama are gender-neutral, which contrasts with Mr., Ms. or Mx.
In formal or polite contexts, “watashi” is gender neutral. However, when it's used in informal or casual contexts, it is usually perceived as feminine. “Boku” is used by men and young boys.
BOKU is for males and KIMI is referring to a female and is equivalent to ANATA. However in some songs the girls use BOKU as you mentioned.
Both of them are the first person pronoun for man. They can be used in casual conversation. However, "Ore" is not proper with respectful and humble words. Boku: Polite, Sophisticate, Humble You can use it among your friends but they may feel you are too polite.
no – の : a case particle used after a noun or pronoun to make its possessive case. In the example, this is used after “boku” to make its possessive case, “boku no”, which means 'my' in Japanese.
Does Japan have gender nouns?
Japanese has no concept of noun gender or number. ※'Tomodachi' is OK for any of the above. If you want to be more specific, you can say 'otoko no tomodachi (male friend)', 'onna no tomodachi (female friend)' or 'tomodachi san-nin (3 friends)'.
Not seldomly, the gender of a person can be guessed by the ending of his/her first name. First names ending with -ro, -shi, -ya, or -o are typically male first names, while names ending in -ko, -mi, -e and -yo are typically female first names.
In formal or polite contexts, “watashi” is gender neutral. However, when it's used in informal or casual contexts, it is usually perceived as feminine. “Boku” is used by men and young boys. “Ore” is also used by men a lot.
When Japanese people explicitly state “you” in their sentences, it's proper to use the person's name and attach a suffix. You are probably already familiar with “~san”, which is a polite suffix. If you use “anata” with someone who you know, it is rude.
The wakashu are sometimes called traditional Japan's third gender. During adolescence, when the wakashu were sexually mature but free of adult responsibilities, it was socially acceptable for them to be enjoyed as sex partners by both women and men.
